Shang Chi star Simu Liu thanks former employer for firing him 10 years ago and shares inspiring story

Tuesday was quite a special day for Chinese-Canadian actor Simu Liu, as 10 years ago on this day he was laid off as an accountant in a multinational company and as a result ventured into the acting profession. Simu Liu, who has worked on shows like Kim’s Convenience, and rose to fame last year for playing the protagonist in Shang Chi and Marvel Studios’ The Legend of the Ten Rings, shared an inspiring Instagram post on Tuesday. With a Marvel Studios blockbuster debut and upcoming movies starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, Simu has become a global star. However, this was not the case ten years ago, when he worked as an accountant in a multinational in Toronto. In a recent Instagram post, Simu shared how it was only after being fired from the job he hated so much that he was able to pursue his dream in Hollywood.

The 32-year-old actor shared a screenshot of his tweet in a recent Instagram post with a lengthy caption. Simu’s tweet read, “Soon it will be April 12th. The day I was fired from Deloitte. I owe my life to giving up a career I hated. Accounting = not for me. The caption accompanying the screenshot read: “Ten years to the day I was led into my managing partner’s office at Deloitte and told they were terminating my employment with effect immediate.” Recalling the incident, Simu added that shortly after being fired, he went back to get his things and all of his colleagues just watched in stunned silence.

Expressing how much worse it was for him back then, Simu said he felt like his life was over. The actor also added that he felt he was wasting the countless time and money his family had invested in him.

However, Simu mentioned that during those ten years, he struggled and rose through the ranks to break into the entertainment industry. It should be noted that Simu even worked as a model for Shutterstock images, and even now his generic images are used on products, posters, and several online articles. Shortly after his Shang Chi debut, the actor’s stock photos became a stockpile of social media memes.

Simu wrote that for four of those ten years he ran like a “headless chicken” as he suffered financial stress and searched for ways to survive to fulfill his “chimerical dream”, as some told him. The actor added that it’s only been in the past three years that his struggle has started to pay off.

The actor concluded his post by telling his followers that no amount of money is worth jeopardizing their vision. The actor wrote, “Chasing a dream – your dream – through thick and thin…that’s life.” The actor also expressed his gratitude to Deloitte Toronto, writing, “You have done for me what I never had the courage to do myself; you destroyed a life i was building for someone else, so i could finally start building a life for myself.

Simu Liu will soon be releasing his memoir We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story later this year.
