CHARLOTTE, NC — Federal agencies may soon be hiring based on job seekers’ skills.
The Office of Personnel Management issued new guidance to federal agencies to help them start a more competency-based approach to hiring.
It focuses more on what candidates can do, rather than their credentials. It’s also more inclusive because it makes it easier for people without a degree to show off their talents.

More and more companies are hiring this way.
According to a March report from LinkedIn, about 40% of employers have used skills data to hire. And companies that use skills data are 60% more likely to find a “successful hire.”
A 2020 decree of President Trump asked The Office of Personnel Management to help agencies adapt to hiring skills. President Biden extend this order until the end of this year so that all agencies can adopt it in time.
